Message from the Vice-Chancellor

A warm welcome to the website of Khulna Agricultural University (KAU) which is focused with the vision to produce graduates as smart citizens by providing quality education and research on the contemporary and emerging agricultural challenges. The founder of our country, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, had a lifelong aim of creating a wealthy and happy Bangladesh through enhancing the standard of living for farmers and the agriculture industry nationwide.

Bangladesh’s southern region is particularly vulnerable to natural disasters and differs greatly from other regions in terms of agriculture, topography, salinity, biodiversity, climate change, and economic standing. The country has a large coastal zone that accounts for around 32% of the country’s overall geographical area. The region is home to almost 35 million people, which is about 29% of the country’s total population. Seasonal floods, tropical cyclones, storm surges, saline intrusion, land subsidence, and other extreme climatic hazards afflict this region regularly. Because of rising sea levels due to climate change, this section of the country has become more vulnerable. Despite all the constraints, Bangladesh’s southern region has immense potential for development of all the sectors of agriculture i.e., crop, livestock and fisheries. In addition to the Sundarbans, the biggest mangrove forest in the world, the region has a long coastline, numerous waterbodies, and abundant natural resources.

To tackle the challenges and ensure food security of the people living in the region, Honorable Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina has comprehended the need to establish an agricultural university in the southern Bangladesh. Honorable Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina has realized the above challenges and thought to establish an agricultural university in this region. Because of her strong wishes, Khulna Agricultural University act was implemented at National Parliament on 14th July 2015. I was appointed as the second Vice-Chancellor on November 16, 2022 and immediately got focused on developing KAU as one of the top agricultural universities in Asia.

The university is guided by the philosophy that advanced information, experiences, and efficient application methods and techniques can be generated, shared, and disseminated to improve the ability of graduates and other stakeholders. Their expertise and research will help to develop sustainable technology as well as high-yielding varieties and breeds that are compatible with the local climate and geography. Presently, the university offers five undergraduate degrees which are i) Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, ii) Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, iii) Bachelor of Science in Fisheries, iv) Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Economics and v) Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Engineering and Technology, under 5 faculties comprising 43 departments. The university intends to start offering PhD and Master of Science degrees in the near future.

In order to prepare our students for the challenges of the twenty-first century, we are devoted to offering them high-quality education, cutting-edge research, and co-curricular facilities based on their individual needs. In my opinion, our graduates will be an invaluable resource for the local community, industry and government as they work to create Smart Bangladesh.
